The Jayhawks Come to Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin

Once upon a time, there was a great music magazine for musicians and music fans called Musician. I used to write for it occasionally. Here is one of the stories I did on the Jayhawks when they were finishing up their album Sound of Lies in Madison, Wisconsin.

Sound of Lies

It was an interesting album and the band members were very friendly, well-read and laid back. The story behind the story... At the time of the article, the editor for Musician had chosen not to publish a review of my then new book Black Market Beatles: The Story Behind the Lost Recordings. This of course did not sit well with me, so I found a way to plug the book anyway. Believe it or not (as you discover how I got the plug in the magazine by writing about the Jayhawks) it is a true story!

So, without further ado, here is the story of the Jayhawks coming to Smart Studios...
Note the mention of long time friend of Smart, Freedy Johnston on the cover, who made the must-have album This Perfect World with Butch Vig.
